Co-Regulation: The Calm in the Storm

"You need to calm down."

Some of the least effective words in the English language (unless they are being sung by Taylor Swift). Not because they're wrong. Calming down is great! But because they ask the child to do the very thing their brain currently cannot do. Self-regulation requires the prefrontal cortex, and during emotional overwhelm, the prefrontal cortex is offline. Telling a dysregulated child to calm down is like telling someone whose legs are broken to walk.

So if a child can't calm themselves down, how does calming happen?

Through you.

What Co-Regulation Actually Means

Co-regulation is the process by which a regulated adult nervous system helps bring a dysregulated child's nervous system back into balance. It's not a strategy. It's not a script. It's a biological process rooted in how human nervous systems are designed to work.

Mona Delahooke's research grounds this in developmental neuroscience: from infancy, children develop the capacity for emotional regulation not by being taught rules about feelings, but by being in proximity to regulated caregivers whose nervous systems provide the template. The baby who is held during distress learns, at a body level, that distress is survivable. That learning happens through the caregiver's heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, voice, and facial expression, not through words.

Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory explains the mechanism. The vagus nerve, which runs from the brain to the gut, is the primary regulator of the autonomic nervous system. When a child is in the presence of a calm adult, their vagus nerve picks up cues of safety: a relaxed face, a warm voice, a steady heartbeat. These cues signal the child's nervous system that it's safe to come out of protection mode and return to social engagement.

This is not metaphor. It's physiology. A calm adult body literally changes a child's nervous system state. That's why co-regulation works when words don't.

What Co-Regulation Looks Like in Practice

Co-regulation doesn't require perfection. It requires presence.

Your body, not your words. Sit near the child. Get below their eye level. Relax your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Breathe slowly. These physical adjustments are not performance. They're genuine nervous system inputs that affect both you and the child. The child's neuroception is reading your body constantly, and it responds to what it detects faster than language can reach.

Your voice. Lower, slower, softer. Not a whisper (which can feel eerie to a scared child), but a warm, steady, slightly lower-than-normal register. The prosody (rhythm and melody) of your voice is processed by the vagus nerve before the content of your words is processed by the cortex. How you sound matters more than what you say.

Your patience. Co-regulation takes time. The nervous system doesn't flip a switch. It settles gradually, in waves. The child may seem to calm and then escalate again. That's not failure. That's the system finding its way back. Stay present through the waves. Janet Lansbury's respectful approach reminds us that trusting the child's process, even when it's messy and slow, is more powerful than trying to speed it up.

Your regulation. This is the part that doesn't get talked about enough. You cannot co-regulate from a dysregulated state. If your own heart is racing, if your jaw is clenched, if your voice is tight, the child's nervous system will pick up on that and match it. Your calm is the intervention. Which means taking care of your own regulation is not separate from helping your child. It's the prerequisite.

Why Co-Regulation Comes Before Self-Regulation

There's a developmental sequence that many parenting approaches skip over. The sequence goes: co-regulation first, then self-regulation. Not the other way around.

A child doesn't arrive in the world knowing how to regulate their emotions. They learn it through thousands of co-regulatory experiences: being held when they cry, being soothed when they're scared, being accompanied through frustration rather than being punished for it. Each of these experiences builds the neural architecture for eventual self-regulation. Without them, the architecture doesn't develop on its own.

Peg Dawson's work on executive functioning development supports this: emotional regulation is an EF skill that matures slowly, over years, and is profoundly shaped by the child's relational environment. A child who has consistent access to co-regulation develops stronger self-regulation over time. A child who is repeatedly told to "handle it yourself" before they have the neural capacity to do so develops avoidance, shutdown, or explosive reactivity instead.

Carol Dweck's neuroplasticity research adds the brain science: the neural pathways for self-regulation are literally built through repeated co-regulatory experiences. Each time a caregiver helps a child move from dysregulation back to regulation, the child's brain strengthens the pathway for doing it independently. The co-regulation isn't a crutch. It's the construction process.

This is why Delahooke argues so strongly against premature self-regulation expectations. Asking a five-year-old to "use your words" during a meltdown, or expecting a ten-year-old with ADHD to "just take a deep breath" during a homework battle, assumes a capacity the child may not yet have. And expecting it before it's developed doesn't build it. It just adds shame to the overwhelm.

Co-Regulation Across Ages

Co-regulation isn't just for toddlers. The need for it changes in form but not in substance throughout childhood and into adolescence.

For young children (2-6), co-regulation is primarily physical: holding, rocking, sitting close, using a calm voice. The child may need to be near your body to settle. Rahima Baldwin Dancy's work on nurturing the whole child supports the importance of physical warmth and proximity in these years as the foundation for later emotional capacity.

For school-age children (7-11), co-regulation becomes more relational: being available, sitting nearby during homework, offering a calm check-in after school, being present during hard moments without jumping to fix them. The child may not want to be held, but they still need your regulated presence in the room.

For adolescents (12+), co-regulation often looks like respecting their space while making it clear you're available. A text that says "I'm here if you want to talk." Staying up until they get home. Sitting in the car together without forcing conversation. Teenagers often reject overt co-regulation (hugs, close physical proximity) while still desperately needing the safety signal of a calm adult who is clearly not going anywhere.

At every age, the principle is the same: the child borrows the adult's regulation until they can generate their own. And the adult's job is to have regulation available to lend.

The Hardest Part

Let's be honest about what makes co-regulation difficult: it asks you to be calm when you're not calm. It asks you to regulate yourself first, in the exact moment when your child's behavior is most activating. It asks you to override your own stress response and choose presence over reactivity.

That is genuinely hard. And it's especially hard if you didn't receive co-regulation in your own childhood, if your nervous system learned early that no one was coming to help, and you had to figure it out alone.

Tara Brach's work on self-compassion is essential here: you can only give what you have. On the days when your regulation is depleted and you can't be the calm in the storm, that's not failure. That's a signal that you need support, too. And seeking that support (from a partner, a friend, a therapist, a community) is not weakness. It's the same principle applied to yourself: you need co-regulation before you can offer it.

We don't have to feel calm to act calmly. You can notice your own activation ("my heart is racing, I'm getting frustrated") and still choose to lower your voice, sit down, and wait. That gap between what you feel and what you do is where co-regulation lives. It's not about being a perfectly regulated person. It's about making the choice, in the moment, to be the anchor.

Understanding Your Child’s Meltdown Signals

What a Meltdown Actually Is

A meltdown is not a tantrum. This distinction matters.

A tantrum is goal-directed behavior. The child wants something, and crying or screaming is a strategy to get it. Tantrums tend to stop when the child gets what they want or when they realize the strategy isn't working. The child maintains some level of awareness of their audience and adjusts their behavior accordingly.

A meltdown is a nervous system event. Mona Delahooke's work makes this distinction with clinical precision: a meltdown occurs when the child's nervous system has shifted out of the regulated, socially engaged state and into a protective state (fight, flight, or freeze). The child is no longer making strategic choices. The survival brain has taken over, and the thinking brain (prefrontal cortex) has gone offline.

Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory provides the framework: the nervous system is constantly scanning the environment for cues of safety and danger (a process Porges calls neuroception). When the system detects too much threat, too much demand, too much unpredictability, it shifts into protection mode. The child doesn't choose this. It happens automatically, beneath conscious awareness.

This is why reasoning with a child mid-meltdown doesn't work. You're directing language at a brain region that's temporarily unavailable. The child can't hear you. They can't process logic. They can't "choose" to calm down. Their body is running a survival program, and it will run until the threat signal subsides.

The Signals Before the Storm

Every child has a pattern. The specifics differ, but the principle is universal: the nervous system doesn't go from calm to crisis in one step. There's a progression, and it leaves clues.

Body changes. Clenched fists. Tightened jaw. Rigid posture. Pacing. Rocking. Picking at skin or clothing. For some children, the opposite: going very still, very quiet, almost disappearing. These are the body's early responses to rising stress. Delahooke's body-up approach teaches us to read the body before the behavior, because the body always shows what's happening before the child can name it.

Voice changes. Getting louder. Getting quieter. Pitch rising. Speaking faster. Starting to whine or repeat themselves. The voice is one of the most reliable indicators of nervous system state because it's controlled by the vagus nerve, the same nerve that governs the social engagement system. When the vagus nerve withdraws support for social communication, the voice changes.

Behavioral escalation. Increasing irritability. Shorter fuse. More rigid responses. Refusing things they normally accept. Picking fights with siblings. These behaviors are often read as "being difficult" when they're actually the behavioral expression of a nervous system that's approaching its limit.

Withdrawal. Some children don't escalate outwardly. They retreat. They get quiet, glassy-eyed, checked out. This is the dorsal vagal response, a different kind of protection. It looks like disengagement, but it's actually overwhelm turned inward. Caregivers sometimes miss this signal because the child isn't causing a problem. But the withdrawal is just as significant as the explosion.

Why Caregivers Miss the Signals

This isn't about blame. It's about understanding why attuning to a child's pre-meltdown state is genuinely hard.

You're dysregulated, too. If your own nervous system is activated (you're rushed, stressed, hungry, overstimulated), your capacity to read your child's signals drops. Delahooke's co-regulation principle works both directions: your child reads your nervous system, and you read theirs. When both are strained, the signals get lost in the noise.

The signals are subtle. A slightly tighter grip on a fork. A pause before responding. A change in breathing. These are not obvious. They require a level of attentional presence that daily life doesn't always afford. Sara Ward's research on the ADHD brain is relevant for caregivers, too: when your own attention is divided, filtering for relevant cues becomes harder.

You've been trained to respond to behavior, not to the body. Most parenting advice focuses on what to do when the behavior happens. Very little focuses on what to notice before it happens. Delahooke's work is revolutionary precisely because it shifts the focus from the top of the iceberg (behavior) to what's underneath (the nervous system state that's driving it).

What to Do When You See the Signals

Lower the demand. Whatever you were about to ask of the child, simplify it, postpone it, or remove it. If homework is the trigger, take a break. If the transition is the trigger, slow it down. The nervous system is signaling that the current demand exceeds the current capacity. The fastest way to prevent a meltdown is to reduce the demand.

Move closer, not louder. Proximity is co-regulation. A calm adult body nearby sends a safety signal to the child's nervous system. Walk toward them, not away. Get on their level. Use a quieter voice, not a louder one. Janet Lansbury's work reminds us that our physical presence communicates more than our words.

Offer sensory regulation. A drink of water. A crunchy snack. A weighted blanket. A few minutes outside. Movement. Deep pressure. These aren't distractions. They're nervous system inputs that can help shift the child from sympathetic activation (fight/flight) back toward the social engagement system. What works is child-specific, and learning your child's regulatory profile is part of the attunement process.

Name what you see, gently. "I notice your body is getting tense. I think you might be getting overwhelmed." This isn't a diagnosis. It's an invitation for the child to notice their own body, which is the beginning of interoceptive awareness. Over time, the child starts to recognize their own signals before the adult does. That's the long game.

Don't teach in this moment. The pre-meltdown window is not a teaching moment. It's a support moment. Save the conversation about strategies, alternatives, and what they could do differently for later, when everyone is calm. Tara Brach's practice of radical acceptance applies: meet what is happening right now without trying to fix it or turn it into a lesson.

After the Meltdown

When a meltdown does happen (and it will), the most important thing is not what you did wrong. It's what you do next.

Stay close if the child allows it. Stay nearby if they don't. Wait for the nervous system to settle. Don't rush the recovery. And when everyone is calm, repair if needed and reconnect. The child doesn't need a lecture about what happened. They need to know the relationship survived it.

Russell Barkley's research reminds us that EF skills, including emotional regulation, are profoundly state-dependent. A child who melts down today may handle the same situation beautifully tomorrow. That's not inconsistency. That's how developing brains work. And the caregiver who can hold that understanding without taking the meltdown personally is the caregiver who can be present for the next one.

Thich Nhat Hanh taught: "When the crowded Vietnamese refugee boats met with storms or pirates, if everyone panicked all would be lost. But if even one person remained calm, it was enough."

You are that one person. Your calm is enough.

Repairing Ruptures: How to Bounce Back from Conflict

We talk a lot about connection in parenting. Building it. Protecting it. Trying not to lose it in the middle of a Tuesday meltdown over socks.

But here's the part that doesn't get enough airtime: connection breaks. It breaks regularly. And that's not a sign of failure. It's a sign that you're in a real relationship with a real, developing human being.

What matters most isn't whether ruptures happen. It's what happens next.

What Is a Rupture?

A rupture is any moment where the connection between two people gets disrupted. In families, this can look like a hundred different things:

  • You snap at your child after asking them to put their shoes on for the fourth time.
  • Your child says something hurtful during a meltdown and then shuts down.
  • A misunderstanding spirals into a power struggle that leaves everyone feeling awful.
  • You enforce a boundary and your child feels rejected, even though the boundary was the right call.

Ruptures aren't limited to big blowups. Sometimes they're quiet. A dismissed feeling. A distracted response when your child was trying to tell you something important. A moment where your own stress leaked into your tone and your child absorbed it.

For kids with executive functioning challenges, ruptures can feel especially intense. Difficulty with emotional regulation, cognitive flexibility, and perspective-taking can make it harder to move through conflict and find the way back to connection. That's why the repair part matters so much.

Why Repair Matters More Than Perfection

Here's something that might take some pressure off: research consistently shows that it's not the absence of conflict that builds secure attachment. It's the presence of repair.

When a child experiences a rupture followed by a genuine repair, they learn something powerful:

  • Relationships can survive hard moments.
  • Feelings can be big and the relationship can still be safe.
  • People who love each other can mess up, take responsibility, and try again.
  • I am worth coming back to.

That last one is the one that stays with a child.

When we skip repair, or pretend the rupture didn't happen, kids internalize a different story: that closeness is fragile, that conflict means something is broken, or that their feelings aren't important enough to circle back to. Over time, that shapes how they show up in every relationship they have.

What Repair Actually Looks Like

Repair doesn't require a grand gesture. It doesn't need to be a long, heavy conversation. In fact, the simpler the better, especially for younger kids or kids who get overwhelmed by too much verbal processing.

Name what happened, simply:

"Earlier today, I raised my voice when you were frustrated about homework. That wasn't okay, and I'm sorry."

Own your part without qualifying it:

Not "I'm sorry I yelled, but you weren't listening." Just "I'm sorry I yelled. You deserved a calmer response from me."

That "but" erases the repair. Kids hear everything after the "but" and nothing before it.

Make space for their experience:

"How did that feel for you?" or "I wonder if that felt scary or confusing when I got so frustrated."

You don't need them to respond. You're showing them that their experience matters to you, even when you were the one who caused the rupture.

Reconnect through action:

Sometimes repair isn't verbal at all. It's sitting next to them quietly. It's offering to read together. It's a hand on their back or a silly face that says I'm here, we're okay. Follow your child's lead on what reconnection feels like for them.

Teaching Kids to Repair Conflict

Repair isn't just a caregiver skill. It's one of the most important relational skills a child can develop. And they learn it by watching you do it first.

Once your child has seen you model repair many times, you can gently begin coaching them through their own repair moments. But timing matters. A child who is still dysregulated, still flooded, still in fight-or-flight cannot access the part of their brain that handles empathy, perspective-taking, and language. Pushing for an apology in that moment teaches compliance, not repair.

Wait until everyone's nervous system has settled. Then try:

"You and your sister had a really hard moment earlier. I wonder if there's something you want to say to her, or something you two could do together to feel better."

Notice that this isn't "Say you're sorry." Forced apologies are performance. Real repair is about reconnection, and it can take many forms: a note, a drawing, a shared activity, a hug, or simply "I didn't mean to hurt your feelings."

For kids with executive functioning differences, you may need to scaffold the repair process more explicitly. That might look like helping them identify what happened, how the other person might have felt, and brainstorming together what a repair could look like. Visual supports or social stories can help here too, especially for kids who struggle with perspective-taking.

When Repair Feels Hard

Let's be honest: repair takes humility. It asks you to set aside your own defensiveness and lead with vulnerability, which is especially hard when you're tired, overstimulated, or carrying your own history of unrepaired ruptures.

If you grew up in a home where apologies didn't happen, where conflict was swept under the rug or met with punishment, repair might not come naturally. That's okay. You're learning a new pattern, and your child benefits every single time you practice it, even imperfectly.

A few things that can help:

  • Give yourself a cooldown period before you try to repair. You can't co-regulate from a dysregulated place.
  • Remind yourself that owning a mistake doesn't make you a bad caregiver. It makes you a safe one.
  • Start small. Even "Hey, I don't think I handled that well. Can we try again?" is a repair.

The Ripple Effect

When kids grow up in homes where repair is a normal, expected part of relationships, they carry that into friendships, classrooms, and eventually into their adult relationships. They become people who can say "I messed up" without crumbling. People who can receive an apology and trust it. People who understand that conflict doesn't have to mean the end of closeness.

That's the long game. And it starts with the small, imperfect, courageous moments where you turn back toward your child and say: "That didn't go well. Let's try again. You're worth coming back to."

One small thing:

The next time you snap, wait for calm, then try the whole repair in one line: “That didn’t go well. Let’s try again. You’re worth coming back to.”

Say What You See: Acknowledging Children’s Feelings

"You're okay."

We say it with love, usually while crouching, usually while a small person dissolves in front of us. And it almost never works, because the child knows something we've momentarily forgotten: they are not okay. Not right now. Telling them otherwise doesn't comfort them. It corrects them.

When adults dismiss or minimize a child's feelings — even gently, even kindly — children learn one of two things: hide the feeling, or conclude the feeling is wrong. Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, whose How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk has been handed between caregivers for forty years, put it simply: acknowledging feelings opens the door to emotional growth. Janet Lansbury builds on the same idea — trust children to understand their own experience. Don't rush to fix. Don't rush to distract. Listen first.

The Swaps

The whole practice fits in a handful of language swaps. None of them require you to feel calm. They only require you to say what you see.

Instead of "Don't be sad," try "I see you're feeling sad. Do you want to tell me about it?"

Instead of "There's nothing to be afraid of," try "It sounds like you're scared. That's okay. I'm here with you."

Instead of "Stop crying," try "It's okay to cry. I'm here to listen."

Notice what the second column has in common: not one of those sentences argues with the child about what they're feeling. The feeling is taken as given — accurate, allowed, survivable — and the argument that was about to happen simply doesn't.

Why This Is Harder Than It Sounds

Because the dismissals are reflexes. "You're okay" is what our own grown-ups said to us. It comes out before we've decided to say it, and it comes out fastest exactly when we're most stressed — in the checkout line, at bedtime, in front of the in-laws.

So don't aim for perfect. Aim for noticing. The first stage of this practice is just hearing yourself say "there's nothing to worry about" a half-second after it leaves your mouth. That's not failure. That's the reflex becoming visible, which is the only place change can start.

Building the Vocabulary

Children can't name what they don't have words for, and the words come from us, in the moment, attached to something real:

"You look frustrated — that puzzle piece keeps not fitting."

"You're bouncing! You're excited about tonight."

"Your shoulders went down when Grandma left. I wonder if you're feeling a little sad."

Books help too — pausing on a character's face and wondering aloud what they might be feeling costs nothing and builds the same muscle. But the labels that stick are the ones that arrive while the feeling is actually happening, offered as a guess rather than a verdict. I wonder if is one of the most useful phrases in parenting. It leaves the child room to say "no — it's not that," which is itself emotional literacy in action.

What This Builds

A child whose feelings are acknowledged learns, over hundreds of small moments, a set of things nobody ever has to teach them directly: that emotions are information rather than emergencies. That feelings pass. That saying "I'm angry" works better than showing it with a thrown truck. That asking for help is safe, because the last hundred times they brought a feeling to you, you didn't flinch.

And they learn one more thing, further down and more important than the rest: my inner life is real, and the people who love me treat it as real. That belief is the floor everything else stands on — friendships, classrooms, and eventually the way they'll talk to their own kids in a checkout line, thirty years from now.

None of it requires special tools or a feelings curriculum. It requires the sentence you were about to say, swapped for a sentence that starts with what you see.

Every Feeling Gets a Seat at the Table: Radical Acceptance for Kids

Happy Love Day. To honor my favorite holiday of the year, here is a lengthy post for you to mull over. Summary statement if you don't have the bandwidth to finish: before your child can name what they feel, they have to be allowed to feel it — and that starts with your calm, your presence, and your willingness to let every feeling have a seat at the table.

There's a moment I see again and again in my work with families. A child is crying — hard, messy, inconvenient crying — and the well-meaning adult nearby does one of two things: they rush to fix it, or they try to talk the child out of it. You're okay. There's nothing to cry about. Let's think about something happy instead.

The intention is love. But the message the child receives is something different: That feeling you're having? It's too much. Put it away.

This is where radical acceptance — a concept rooted in the work of Tara Brach — has something profound to offer families. And when we pair it with what Dr. Mona Delahooke teaches us about the nervous system, it becomes more than a philosophy. It becomes a practice with a body.

What Radical Acceptance Actually Means (and What It Doesn't)

Radical acceptance is the practice of meeting reality — including the painful, uncomfortable, inconvenient parts — without trying to push it away or pretend it's something else. For adults, Brach describes this as learning to be present with our own suffering instead of running from it. For kids, it starts with something simpler and more foundational: the experience of having their feelings met without judgment by the people they trust most.

This doesn't mean anything goes. Acceptance isn't permissiveness. You can hold a firm boundary — I won't let you hit your sister — while simultaneously honoring what's underneath the behavior — You're really frustrated right now, and that makes sense.

The distinction matters. When a child feels accepted in their emotional experience, even as we guide their behavior, they learn something essential: I am not my worst moment. My feelings are information, not evidence that something is wrong with me.

Before They Can Name It, They Have to Feel It

Here's where Delahooke's research changes the conversation. Most of the advice we hear about emotional literacy focuses on naming feelings — give your child a feelings chart, teach them to say "I'm angry" or "I'm scared," practice identifying emotions in storybooks. And that's all valuable. But it assumes something that isn't always true: that a child can actually feel what's happening in their body in the first place.

Delahooke calls this interoception — the internal sense that gives us information about our body's state. It's what lets us notice a tight chest, a racing heart, a clenched jaw, a stomach that feels like it's falling. For some children, this sense is well-developed and they can connect those sensations to emotional labels fairly easily. For others — especially children with ADHD, executive dysfunction, sensory processing differences, or trauma histories — interoception is murky or muted. They may know something feels wrong but have no idea what, where, or why.

If we skip straight to "name your feeling and pick a strategy," we're asking some kids to do something they don't have the wiring for yet. It's like asking someone to read a map in a language they haven't learned.

Radical acceptance starts here — not with words, but with the body. It starts with a child being allowed to have the sensation without being rushed past it.

The Nervous System Underneath

Delahooke's work, grounded in Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory, gives us a framework for understanding what's happening beneath the surface when a child is struggling. She describes three pathways:

The green pathway is where a child feels safe, connected, and socially engaged. This is where learning, communication, and emotional awareness happen. When kids are in the green, they can reflect, problem-solve, and accept comfort.

The red pathway is the fight-or-flight response — the nervous system detecting threat and mobilizing the body for survival. A child in the red may look defiant, aggressive, hyperactive, or panicked. But what they are is overwhelmed.

The blue pathway is shutdown — the nervous system's last-resort response when fight or flight hasn't worked. A child in the blue may look withdrawn, spacey, compliant on the surface, or emotionally flat. They're not calm. They're collapsed.

Here's what this has to do with radical acceptance: you cannot accept a feeling you cannot access. And a child in the red or blue pathway does not have reliable access to their thinking brain. They are not choosing to melt down or shut down. Their nervous system is doing what it was designed to do in the face of perceived threat.

When we meet that child with acceptance rather than correction — when we say, through our words and our body language and our own regulated presence, I see you. You're safe. I'm here — we are doing something neurobiological. We are helping their nervous system shift back toward the green pathway, where feeling and naming and accepting become possible.

That is co-regulation. And it is the mechanism through which radical acceptance actually lands for a child.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Start with your own body. Before you try to help your child with what they're feeling, notice what's happening in yours. Are your shoulders tight? Is your breathing shallow? Is there heat in your chest? Brach's practice of pausing — what she calls the "sacred pause" — is powerful here. You don't have to be perfectly calm. You just have to be aware enough to choose your next move rather than react.

Describe what you notice, not what you think they should feel. Instead of "You seem angry," try "I notice your hands are in fists and your breathing is really fast." This does two things: it builds your child's interoceptive awareness, and it communicates acceptance without requiring the child to label anything before they're ready. You're being their mirror, not their corrector.

Resist the fix. This is the hardest one. When your child is hurting, every instinct says to make it better — to offer a solution, a distraction, a reframe. But sometimes the most accepting thing you can do is simply stay. I'm right here. You don't have to be different than you are right now. Children who are given space to feel their feelings all the way through — without being rushed or redirected — build a deeper capacity for emotional resilience than children who are taught to manage their feelings away.

Hold the boundary and the feeling at the same time. Radical acceptance doesn't mean letting a child throw things at the wall without response. It means separating the behavior from the feeling. I can't let you throw that, and I can see how frustrated you are. Both of those things are true at the same time. This is what Delahooke means when she says behavior is the signal, not the target. You address the behavior. You honor what's underneath.

Let acceptance be imperfect. You will not do this perfectly. You will lose your patience. You will say the wrong thing. You will realize, mid-sentence, that you're lecturing when you meant to listen. That's okay. Brach's entire framework rests on the understanding that acceptance is a practice, not a destination. And when you model the ability to notice your own misstep, repair it, and try again, you are teaching your child the most radical form of self-acceptance there is: I am a work in progress, and that's allowed.

Acceptance Grows Outward

Children who feel accepted in their homes — not for performing wellness, but in their full, messy, complicated emotional reality — are children who can extend that acceptance to others. They become the kid who isn't rattled by a classmate who stims or flaps. The kid who can sit with a friend who's crying without needing to fix it. The kid who is curious about difference rather than threatened by it.

This doesn't happen because we taught them a lesson about diversity. It happens because acceptance was modeled in their body, in their nervous system, in the thousands of small moments where someone met them exactly where they were and said: This feeling is welcome here. You are welcome here.

A Note on the Hard Days

If you're reading this and thinking, "But what about when I can't do any of this? What about when I'm the one who's dysregulated?" — that's not failure. That's being human. Delahooke is clear that caregivers' nervous systems matter too. Your capacity to offer acceptance to your child is directly connected to whether you are receiving acceptance yourself — from your partner, your community, your own inner voice.

Brach writes about the practice of offering yourself the same compassion you'd offer a close friend. On the hard days, radical acceptance might look like this: I am exhausted. I did not handle that well. And I can try again tomorrow. Your child doesn't need you to be perfect. They need you to be real, to be present, and to keep coming back.

That's the practice. And it's enough.

Before Social Skills: Why Feeling Safe Comes First

Walk into almost any elementary school and you'll find the Zones of Regulation on a wall — blue for low, green for calm, yellow for wobbly, red for overwhelmed. It gives a whole classroom a shared vocabulary for feelings, and that's no small thing.

But watch a particular kind of kid stand in front of that chart. The adult asks, "What zone are you in?" and the child stares at it the way you'd stare at a map of a city you've never visited. They're not refusing to answer. They genuinely don't know.

Here's what the chart quietly assumes: that noticing what's happening inside your body is the easy first step, and naming it is the hard part. For a lot of children — especially kids with ADHD, executive dysfunction, sensory differences, or trauma histories — it's exactly backwards. Naming is the last step of a long process, and the process starts somewhere the chart can't see.

What Happens Before the Word

By the time a child could truthfully say "I'm in the red zone," their nervous system has already done almost all of the work. It scanned the room for safety or threat — automatically, beneath awareness. It produced sensations: a tight chest, a racing heart, heat in the face. It may have already launched a protective response.

Mona Delahooke's work names the two abilities underneath all of this. Neuroception is the nervous system's automatic threat detection — nobody chooses it, it just runs. Interoception is the felt sense of your own body: noticing the racing heart, the clenched stomach, the heavy limbs. Naming a feeling requires interoception first. You can't label a signal you never received.

And interoception is wildly uneven across children. Some kids feel their inner weather in high definition. Others get static — they know something is wrong, but not what, or where, or why. Asking that second child to pick a zone isn't teaching emotional literacy. It's asking them to read a map in a language they haven't learned, and then wondering why they act out instead.

The Expectation Gap

Delahooke has a phrase for the space where so much family and classroom conflict lives: the expectation gap — adults expecting children to have intentional control over emotions and behavior earlier than their nervous systems can deliver it.

The gap looks like this: an educator points to the strategies column and the child, still in a protective state, can't use a single one of them. A caregiver says "use your words" and the child, who cannot yet feel the feeling clearly enough to word it, uses behavior instead — because behavior is the only language currently online. The adult concludes the child won't. The truth is the child can't yet. Those call for entirely different responses, and mixing them up is where the shame gets in.

Feeling Comes First. So Build Feeling.

If naming is the last step, then the work is lower down, and it's humbler than a curriculum:

Describe the body, not the emotion. "I see your hands are in fists and your breathing got fast." That's it. No label, no zone, no strategy. You're being a mirror, and every accurate reflection builds the child's own interoceptive map a little further.

Model your own signals out loud. "My shoulders are up by my ears — I think I'm stressed about being late." Kids learn interoception the way they learn everything else: by watching someone do it who isn't in trouble for it.

Give the body real experiences to notice. Movement, swinging, jumping, cold water on wrists, a heavy blanket, a long push on a wall. Body-first activities aren't a break from emotional learning. They are the emotional learning, at the layer where it actually starts.

Honor the sensation even without the word. "Your body is working really hard right now" lands for a child who couldn't tell you a single feeling word. Being understood shouldn't have a vocabulary requirement.

Where the Zones Fit

None of this is an argument against the Zones. It's an argument about sequence. The chart works beautifully for a child who can already feel their inner state — it gives that feeling a name and a plan. For the child who can't yet, the chart comes later, after months of body-first noticing have built something for the words to attach to.

Safety, then sensation, then naming, then strategies. Skip the first two and the last two are just wall decor.

Progress Isn’t a Straight Line

Growth mindset had a moment, and the moment produced a lot of posters. Mistakes help me learn! The power of yet! Nothing on the posters is wrong. But somewhere between Carol Dweck's research and the laminator, the idea got flattened into something suspiciously close to stay positive — and a child who is currently failing at fractions can smell the difference.

The real idea was never about positivity. It was about what struggle means. A fixed mindset reads struggle as a verdict: this is hard because I'm not good at this. A growth mindset reads it as information: this is hard because it's hard, and hard is where growing happens. That reframe matters for every child. It matters double for kids with executive functioning differences, who meet struggle earlier, more often, and more publicly than their classmates do.

The Part the Posters Skip

Progress is not a staircase. It's a scribble that trends upward.

Peg Dawson's work on executive skills gives us the reason: EF capacity is state-dependent. It rises and falls with sleep, stress, hunger, excitement, and everything else a body carries into a day. So the child who wrote a beautiful paragraph on Tuesday and can't start a sentence on Wednesday isn't backsliding, and isn't faking. Tuesday and Wednesday were different nervous systems.

If nobody tells kids this, they draw the obvious wrong conclusion from a bad day: I lost it. I was never really good at this. And if nobody tells caregivers, we draw our own wrong conclusion: they did it yesterday, so today must be a choice. Both conclusions poison the well. The single most protective thing you can teach a child about learning might be this: a bad day is data about the day, not about you.

What Support Actually Looks Like

Praise the move, not the mind. "You tried a different way when the first way didn't work" beats "you're so smart" every time. Smart is a verdict that tomorrow's struggle can overturn. A strategy is theirs forever.

Let them see you be bad at things. Burn the pancakes, lose the game, miss the turn — and narrate it without self-attack. "Well, that didn't work. What else could I try?" One caregiver shrugging cheerfully at their own mistake outweighs a hallway of posters.

Ask about the process, not the score. "What was the hardest part? What would you do differently?" These questions teach a child to look at their own learning the way a coach watches film — with curiosity, not judgment.

Expect the dip. New skills usually get worse before they get better, because the old workaround has been dropped and the new skill isn't automatic yet. If you know the dip is coming, it's a milestone. If you don't, it looks like proof that trying was pointless.

The Line Between Honest and Toxic

There's a version of growth mindset talk that curdles into toxic positivity — don't be frustrated, just believe in yourself! — and kids are rightly allergic to it. The fix is to stop arguing with the feeling and put the acceptance and the confidence in the same sentence:

"This is really hard for you right now, and that's frustrating. And you're getting better at it, even though today doesn't feel like it."

Both halves true. Neither one canceling the other. That's the whole trick — and it's the same both/and that runs through everything else on this blog: the feeling gets a seat at the table, and we keep going.

The Long Game

A child who believes struggle means stupid will spend their energy hiding struggle — avoiding, rushing, shrugging, "forgetting." A child who believes struggle means learning can afford to stay in it long enough for the learning to happen.

Which of those beliefs your child builds is not decided in one conversation. It's decided in a hundred small moments where something went imperfectly and the adult nearby treated it as interesting instead of disappointing. Imperfect progress is still progress. Most progress, honestly, is the imperfect kind.

From Gold Stars to Inner Drive

The sticker chart works. That's the honest place to start — it does work, often overnight, which is exactly why every caregiver of a reluctant tooth-brusher has made one.

And then, a few weeks in, the fine print arrives. The stickers need upgrading to bigger prizes. The behavior evaporates the day the chart comes down. And a small negotiator appears at your elbow asking what they'll get for putting their shoes on — a question that didn't exist before the chart taught them to ask it.

None of this means rewards are evil or that you've broken your child. It means rewards answer a different question than the one we actually care about. A reward answers "what will you give me for doing this?" The question that carries a person through life is "why is this worth doing?" — and decades of research on self-determination theory (Edward Deci and Richard Ryan's work) say that lasting motivation grows from three roots: feeling capable, feeling in charge of yourself, and feeling connected to people who matter. Notice what's not on the list.

Making the Shift

Attach tasks to meaning, not merchandise. Not "read for twenty minutes and get a sticker," but reading as the thing that unlocks the next Dog Man, the recipe they want to make, the game rules they want to learn. Meaning doesn't have to be lofty. It has to be theirs.

Hand over real choices. Which chore first. Which book tonight. Homework at the table or on the floor. Autonomy is one of the three roots, and it costs nothing — the task still happens, but it happens as their decision, and brains work differently for their own decisions than for orders.

Praise the effort, and be specific. "You stuck with that puzzle even when it got annoying" tells a child what worked and that persistence was witnessed. Effort-praise survives failure; outcome-praise doesn't.

Ask the question that builds the muscle. After something's done: "What did you like about doing that?" Not "aren't you proud" — that's an answer wearing a question's clothes. The real question sends a child looking inside for the satisfaction, and the looking is the skill. The first few answers may be "I dunno." Keep asking. The muscle grows slowly and then it's theirs for life.

If a chart exists, retire it gently. Space the rewards out; let a full row earn what a single sticker used to. And narrate the trade as it happens: "You've been doing this without even checking the chart. That's you now — that's not the stickers." Children deserve to be told when a strength has become their own.

One Caveat, Because It Matters Here

For kids with executive functioning differences, the calculus shifts a little. Russell Barkley's work is clear that ADHD brains genuinely need closer, more immediate feedback than other brains — the far-off payoff of "you'll be glad in June" is neurologically out of reach. So near-term structure — checklists, check-ins, small celebrations at the finish line — isn't a bribe. It's a ramp.

The distinction worth keeping: a ramp carries a child toward a task they couldn't otherwise start. A bribe replaces the task's meaning entirely. Celebrate the finish, keep the feedback close and warm — and still, every time, ask the question that points inward. What did you like about doing that? Even a brain that needs the ramp deserves to discover it also has an engine.

What You're Actually Building

A child who works only for rewards is renting their motivation, and the rent keeps going up. A child who has felt — even a few times — the specific satisfaction of doing a hard thing that mattered to them owns something no chart can give and no missing prize can take away.

You won't see the difference this week. You'll see it in ten years, in a person who does the right thing when nobody's watching and no one's paying. That person is being built right now, one "what did you like about doing that?" at a time.

It’s Not Laziness

The homework is sitting right there. It's been sitting there for forty minutes. Your child has, in that time, sharpened two pencils, gotten a snack, visited the bathroom, wondered aloud whether sharks sleep, and is now lying on the floor next to the homework, which remains untouched.

Every adult watching this scene hears the same word in their head. Lazy.

It's worth saying plainly: laziness is the single most common misreading of an executive functioning difference, and it's almost always wrong. Lazy means doesn't want to. What you're usually looking at is can't start — and from the outside, the two are identical.

What's Actually Happening on the Floor

Executive functioning is the brain's management team: working memory holding the plan, flexible thinking adjusting it, self-control keeping you pointed at it. Starting a task — what clinicians call initiation — takes all three at once. The child on the floor has to figure out what "do your homework" even means today, hold the steps in mind, resist the seventeen more interesting things in the room, and begin. For an EF-challenged brain, that launch sequence is the hardest moment of the entire task. Harder than the math itself.

Russell Barkley's line about ADHD applies to the whole EF family: it's not a disorder of knowing what to do, it's a disorder of doing what you know. Your child on the floor knows exactly what to do. That's what makes the scene so maddening — and so misleading.

And there's usually a second layer. A child who has struggled to start things for years has collected a lot of evidence that tasks go badly. So the fear kicks in before the pencil does: this will be awful, I'll get it wrong, it will take forever. Avoidance stops that feeling instantly, which is exactly the kind of relief a brain learns from. The wall you're seeing isn't defiance. It's protection — and it means the fear, not just the skill, needs your attention.

The Reframe That Changes Everything

Swap one word. Not lazystuck.

Lazy is a character flaw, and character flaws get consequences. Stuck is a situation, and situations get help. The moment you make the swap, the useful question appears all by itself: stuck on what? Stuck on where to start? On what "done" looks like? On the fear of doing it wrong? On the transition out of something fun? Each of those has a different answer, and none of the answers is a lecture.

What Help Looks Like

Shrink the start. Not "do your homework" — "put your name on the page." The first domino should be so small it's almost silly, because the launch is the expensive part and everything after it is cheaper.

One instruction at a time. Multi-step directions evaporate from a strained working memory. One step, done, next step.

Make the plan visible. Three steps written on a sticky note turn a foggy dread into a finite object. (This is the same externalization principle behind visual schedules — the paper holds the plan so the brain doesn't have to.)

Routines over decisions. Homework at the same time, in the same spot, after the same snack. Every decision a routine absorbs is capacity handed back to the actual work.

Offer a choice inside the must. "Homework happens — floor or table? Math or reading first?" The task isn't negotiable; the child's ownership of it is.

Celebrate the start, not just the finish. For this brain, beginning was the summit. Say so: "You started on your own. That's the hard part and you did it."

The Part That's Really at Stake

Here's why the wrong word matters so much. Call a child lazy for enough years and they'll agree with you. I'm just lazy becomes the story they tell about themselves — and it's a story with no exit, because you can't problem-solve a character flaw.

I have a hard time getting started, and I have tricks for it — that's a story with an exit. Same child, same floor, same untouched homework. The only thing that changed is what the adult in the room decided it meant. That decision, repeated over a childhood, is the difference between a kid who hides their struggle and a kid who knows how to work with their own brain.

They want to succeed. They always did. Our job is to stop grading the wanting and start helping with the starting.

Small Wins Count Double

There's a moment I want you to picture, because it happens every day and almost nobody claps.

A kid who struggles to start things — for whom beginning is genuinely the hardest part of any task — sits down and does one math problem. One. Then he looks up, and what happens next matters more than the math. Because from the outside, one problem looks like the bare minimum. From inside that kid's brain, one problem meant winning a fight nobody watched: finding the start, resisting everything else in the room, holding the steps together, and pushing through the voice that said it would go badly. That was a summit. It just happens to look like a warm-up.

This is the case for micro-wins — for treating small completions as real ones. Not as a niceness. As a strategy.

Why Small Wins Do Heavy Lifting

For kids with executive functioning differences, effort and outcome are constantly out of proportion. They work twice as hard for half the visible result, and the world grades the visible result. Run that math for a few school years and a kid concludes: effort doesn't work for me. That belief — not the working memory, not the attention — becomes the heaviest thing they carry.

Noticing micro-wins runs the belief in reverse. Every acknowledged small success is evidence: I start things. I finish things. Effort works for me. Confidence isn't built by big victories, because big victories are rare. It's compounded from small ones, like interest — and it lowers the cost of the next attempt, because a task that recently went well is easier to start than one that never has. For a brain where starting is the steepest part, that discount is everything.

What Counts

More than you'd think. One problem finished. A backpack packed without a reminder. Asking for help instead of quietly giving up — that one's enormous; it means they believed help would come. Coming back to a task after losing the thread. Staying in something frustrating for two more minutes than last time. Starting, at all, unprompted.

Each of those is an executive function firing under load. If you watch for them, they're everywhere. If you don't, they're invisible — which is exactly how they've been treated most places these kids have been.

How to Notice Well

Be specific. "Good job" is wallpaper. "You started your homework without being reminded — that's the hard part and you did it" tells a child precisely which behavior was seen, and that it was seen at all.

Praise the doing, not the being. "You stuck with that" beats "you're so smart." One survives a bad day; the other gets contradicted by one.

Keep it proportionate. A quiet, genuine "hey — I noticed" beats confetti. Kids smell inflation instantly, and a child who gets a parade for one worksheet quietly hears they expected me to fail. Low-key and real is the register.

Let some rituals carry it. A fist bump. A note in a jar to read at the end of the month. A "what's one thing you got done today?" at dinner — asked to everyone, adults included, so noticing wins becomes a family habit rather than one kid's treatment plan.

Point the credit inward. The finish line for all of this is a child who notices their own wins. "How did it feel to finish that?" hands them the pen. (It's the same move as asking "what did you like about doing that?" — the satisfaction has to end up located in them, not in your reaction.)

The Long Game

Here's what the compounding buys, years out: not a child with a trophy shelf, but a child with a working relationship to effort. Someone who starts things, because starting has gone well before. Who stays in hard things a little longer, because staying has paid off. Who believes — against a fair amount of early evidence — that they are a person things work out for.

That belief is built one noticed moment at a time, by adults who understood that the one math problem was never just one math problem. Somebody has to be the first witness. It might as well be us.

Games That Stretch Flexible Thinking

Cognitive flexibility — the ability to shift when the situation shifts — is one of those skills that can't be taught by explaining it. No child ever became more flexible because an adult described flexibility to them. The skill lives below language, which means it has to be practiced, and the practice has to be safe enough that a wrong turn costs nothing.

There is exactly one activity that meets all those conditions, and children are already addicted to it. Play.

Games are flexibility training in disguise, and the disguise is the whole point. A child who would melt down over a changed dinner plan will happily submit to a reverse card in Uno — same cognitive event, shift your plan right now, but inside a game the stakes are pretend, everyone's laughing, and the shift gets practiced instead of fought. Every round is a repetition. The brain that has flexed a hundred times at the kitchen table has a hundred reps banked for the day the field trip gets cancelled.

The Games You Already Own

Simon Says is an inhibition-and-switching workout wearing a party hat: act on this command, freeze on that one, and the rule flips every two seconds. Uno does it with reverses, skips, and wild cards — your beautiful plan for that green seven means nothing now, adapt. Red Light, Green Light is pure stop-and-go switching at full sprint.

And the quiet powerhouse: sorting games with a rule change. Sort the buttons by color. Wonderful. Now — by size. Watching a five-year-old physically pause at that moment is watching cognitive flexibility get built in real time. That pause is the rep.

The upgrade that turns any game into a flexibility gym: once the ordinary rules feel easy, change one mid-game. Announce it with mischief, not menace — "new rule! Sevens make you sing your next turn." The first reaction may be protest. That protest, held safely inside something fun, is exactly the muscle working.

No Game Required

Daily life throws free practice at you constantly; the only trick is catching it.

Cooking is a flexibility course with snacks. No buttermilk? What could we use instead? The recipe says balls but the dough says pancakes? Improvise and name it something new. Substitution is flexible thinking you can eat.

Storytelling with a twist: build a story one sentence each, with full permission to swerve. The dragon was actually a substitute educator. Your child's brain has to release its plan for the plot and build on yours — release-and-build is the entire skill, disguised as being silly before bed.

Role reversal: they're the educator, you're the student (be a slightly terrible one; they'll love correcting you). Taking a perspective that isn't yours is flexibility's social twin, and pretend play is where it grows.

Making It Land

Keep it genuinely fun — the moment "flexibility practice" starts feeling like therapy homework, the safety that makes it work evaporates. Pitch the challenge just past comfortable, not past possible; a child who's constantly losing isn't flexing, they're drowning. Narrate your own shifts out loud ("well, the park's closed — new plan, who has one?") so they see that adapting is a normal thing people do, not a punishment for kids who struggle. And when they bend instead of breaking — accept the rule change, take the swerve, survive the reverse card — name it: "You switched gears right there. That was flexible." Skills grow faster when they have a name and a witness.

Progress will look small: a rule change that gets an eye-roll instead of tears, a "fine, THIS way then" instead of a shutdown. Count those. They're the reps compounding — and they were built, one game at a time, at a table where being wrong was allowed to be funny.

A Script for the Plot Twist

The playdate is cancelled. The field trip is rained out. The substitute doesn't know about the fish-feeding job that is, to one particular eight-year-old, the entire point of Tuesdays.

For a lot of kids — especially kids who run on routine — these plot twists don't register as disappointments. They register as system failures. And in the middle of one, the child is being asked to do something quietly enormous: figure out what they feel, put it into words, and ask for what they need, all while their nervous system is sounding alarms. That's improv, performed live, under stress. Improv under stress is precisely the thing their brain is worst at in that moment.

So we hand them their lines ahead of time.

A social script is just that — a short, sturdy sentence rehearsed in calm weather so it's available in a storm. "I feel upset because I was looking forward to this." Seven words. But for the child gripping them, those words are a handle on a moment that had none: the feeling gets named instead of thrown, the adults get information instead of behavior, and the child gets the startling discovery that saying the thing actually works.

This isn't about making kids robotic. It's the opposite. Musicians practice scales so that someday they can improvise. Scripts are scales for hard moments — borrowed words that hold the line until the child's own words are ready.

The Starter Set

When plans change: "I feel upset because I was looking forward to this." "I need a minute to be disappointed." "Okay — what's the new plan?" (That last one is a gift to their future self. The kid who can ask what's the new plan has a rope out of almost any changed moment.)

For transitions: "Can you tell me what happens next?" "How many more minutes?" "This is hard to stop. Can I have a warning before the end?"

When disappointment lands: "I'm sad this didn't work out." "It's okay to feel like this for a while." "Can we figure out when we can try again?"

For asking for help — the most underrated life skill on this page: "I don't get this. Can you explain it a different way?" "I need a break, please." "Can we talk about this later? I'm not ready yet."

How to Actually Teach Them

Rehearse in peacetime. Never introduce a script mid-meltdown — that's teaching someone to swim during the shipwreck. Practice at dinner, in the car, through stuffed animals whose plans keep falling apart. Make the pretend disasters ridiculous. Laughing while rehearsing is not off-task; the calm is what wires the words in reachable.

Let them edit. A script in words your child would never say is a script they'll never use. "I need a minute" might become "gimme a sec." Fine. Theirs works better than yours.

Write them down. A card in the backpack, a list inside the closet door. Kids with working memory challenges can know a script cold and still not find it under stress — the written version is the backup drive.

Use them yourself, audibly. When your own plans collapse: "Ugh. I was really looking forward to that. Okay — I need a minute, and then let's make a new plan." Congratulations, you've just taught the entire method without a single instructional word.

Treat a used script as a triumph. The first time your child mutters "I need a minute" instead of detonating, that is the win. Name it later, warmly: "You told me what you needed right in the middle of feeling awful. That's a big-kid skill. Honestly, it's a skill plenty of grown-ups are still working on."

Scripts are training wheels, and like training wheels they come off on their own. One day the borrowed sentence comes out reshaped in your child's own voice, fitted to a situation you never rehearsed — and the scaffold has quietly become a skill. Until that day, there's real mercy in a child knowing they'll never have to face a plot twist without any lines.

When Change Is Hard

You said it as good news. "Change of plans — we're going to the pool instead of the park!" The pool! Objectively the upgrade! And your child is now crying into the couch cushions as though the park has burned down.

From the outside, this looks like drama over nothing — the new plan was better. But from inside a brain that runs on prediction, something real was lost. Your child had already been to the park in their mind: the route, the swings, which stick they were going to find. The plan wasn't a preference. It was a structure, quietly holding the afternoon up. When it changed, the structure dropped — and what you're watching on the couch isn't a protest about swimming. It's a small collapse, wearing a protest's clothes.

This is what difficulty with cognitive flexibility actually is. Not stubbornness. Not spoiledness. A brain that leans hard on the expected, meeting the unexpected — and for kids wired this way (many kids with executive dysfunction among them), predictability isn't a preference. It's load-bearing.

Rigidity Is Protection

Here's the reframe that changes how the couch moment feels: for a brain that finds the world chaotic, sameness is safety. The insistence on the same cup, the same route, the same order of bedtime events — these aren't power grabs. They're anchors. A child who controls the small things is buying stability they can't yet generate internally.

Which means flexibility can't be demanded into existence. It has to be grown, the way you'd build any capacity: small doses, safe conditions, lots of reps. You're not teaching a lesson. You're renovating a load-bearing wall — slowly, with the house still standing.

Growing It at Home

Practice on purpose, when nothing matters. Don't wait for real disruptions — schedule tiny fake ones. Pajamas inside-out night. Breakfast for dinner. A different chair, announced with a grin. Each one is a controlled burn: the brain experiences plan changed → nothing bad happened at a dose small enough to file as fun. That file is exactly what gets pulled up, someday, when the change is real.

Play "what if." In the car, at dinner: What if we took a different way to school? What if the library was closed when we got there? Rehearsing alternatives in imagination is flexibility practice with zero stakes — the brain gets to visit the unexpected without having to live there. Put hinges on the routine. Keep the frame — routines are the point for these kids — but build in small chosen swings inside it. Reading before snack today instead of after. This cup or that one. Choice is the gentlest form of change, because the child authors it.

Forecast the weather. "In five minutes we're cleaning up." "Tomorrow's schedule is different — here's how." A visual schedule does this all day long without you saying a word. Warning isn't coddling; it's giving the prediction machine time to redraw the map, which is the difference between a wobble and a collapse.

When the real change hits, feelings first. The couch moment is not the teachable moment. Name what was lost — "You were already at the park in your head. It's hard when the picture changes" — and let the disappointment be real before anyone mentions how great the pool is. A child who feels understood in the loss gets to the new plan faster than a child being sold on it. Every time.

Count the small bends. Progress here is quiet: a groan instead of a meltdown, a "fine, but I get the blue cup" instead of a shutdown. That's negotiation — which is flexibility with training wheels on. Name it: "That plan changed and you handled it. I saw."

If change triggers real distress most days and the strategies above barely dent it, that's worth bringing to an occupational therapist or child psychologist — not because something is wrong with your child, but because targeted support exists and works.

The goal was never a child who shrugs at everything. It's a child whose safety travels with them — so that when the plan drops, as plans do, they bend, wobble, and find out they're still standing. That discovery, made enough times in a soft place, becomes the sturdiest structure of all.

It is Sunday evening and your child's stomach hurts.

Not a fake stomach ache. You have watched them long enough to know the difference. You have been to the doctor. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is ever wrong, medically speaking, and yet here it is again, right on schedule, the night before a school week.

The temptation is to reassure. There is nothing to worry about. You will be fine. You always are.

Here is the thing worth sitting with instead: the stomach is not lying. It is reporting. Something in your child has learned that tomorrow is dangerous, and their body got the memo before anyone thought to say it out loud.

Anxiety Is Not Sitting Beside the EF Challenge. It Is Eating It.

Anxiety and executive functioning differences travel together so often that we tend to file them as two separate problems in one child. That framing misses what is actually happening. They are not neighbors. They are feeding each other.

Mona Delahooke's work, grounded in Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory, gives us the mechanism. The nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety and threat, well below conscious thought. When it decides a situation is dangerous, it shifts into a protective state. In that state, the prefrontal cortex, where planning and initiation and working memory live, goes quiet. Not as a punishment. As a design feature. When something is chasing you, deliberation is a liability.

Now put that next to what your child needs in order to do a math worksheet. Planning. Initiation. Working memory. The exact functions that go offline the moment their body decides the worksheet is a threat.

Anxiety does not sit beside the executive functioning challenge. It takes from the same account.

Why the Loop Tightens

This is the part that makes it vicious rather than merely unpleasant.

Start with an EF difference. Tasks go badly more often than they should. Your child notices. Nobody has to tell them, though people usually do.

So their brain, doing its job, starts predicting. This will go badly. That prediction is anxiety. The anxiety pushes the nervous system into protection. Protection takes the prefrontal cortex offline. Offline, the task goes worse than it would have.

The fear was right. Which makes the next prediction stronger.

Russell Barkley's distinction between knowing and performing is the crack this loop lives in. Your child knows how to do it. Performing it is another matter, and anxiety widens the gap between the two every time around.

Peg Dawson's research adds the piece caregivers feel but cannot quite name: executive functioning capacity is state-dependent. It is not a fixed number. It moves with sleep, hunger, stress, and emotion. The child who could do this on Tuesday genuinely cannot do it on Wednesday, and neither of you is imagining it.

Avoidance Is Not the Problem. It Is the Solution.

Then there is the part that grows the loop fastest.

Avoiding the thing works. Immediately. The dread stops. The body settles. Relief arrives within seconds, which is exactly the timeline a brain learns from best.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy frames this usefully: avoidance is not your child's malfunction. It is their best available solution to a problem they do not yet have the tools to solve. It works so well, so fast, that of course it gets used again.

Which means the question is not "why won't they just do it." The question is "what is this avoidance protecting them from, and what would they need in order to not need it."

Why Reassurance Backfires

"There's nothing to worry about" gets said with love, every time. It also does two unhelpful things.

It tells your child that their read on the situation is wrong, which teaches them not to trust their own signals. Tara Brach names the deeper cost. When a child repeatedly hears that their inner experience is mistaken or too much, it hardens into a story about themselves rather than about the moment. Something is wrong with me.

It also aims at the wrong target. A nervous system in a protective state is not processing arguments. You cannot reason someone out of a state that has taken reasoning offline. The words are fine. The audience is unavailable.

What Helps

Treat the body before the task. Regulate first, reason second, always in that order. Movement, a snack, a few minutes of nothing, your calm presence nearby. Delahooke calls this co-regulation, and it is not a warm-up before the real work. It is what makes the real work possible.

Believe the stomach ache. Instead of "there's nothing to worry about," try "your body is telling you this feels big, and I believe it." Validation is not agreement that the danger is real. It is agreement that the feeling is. That distinction lets your child stop defending the feeling and start moving.

Shrink the first step until the fear has nothing to hold. Not the assignment. One problem. Not the essay. One sentence. Anxiety needs something big and vague to grow on. A small concrete thing starves it.

Make the invisible visible. Much of the dread is fog. What is this, how long will it take, where does it end. A written list of three steps turns an unknowable threat into a finite object. Barkley's externalization principle does emotional work here as well as cognitive work.

Do not wait for the fear to leave. It will not, not on request. The insight from ACT is that we make room for the hard feeling while moving toward what matters anyway. "You can be nervous and start. Both at once. Let's do two minutes and then decide."

Collect counter-evidence, unrushed. Every small thing your child finishes while afraid is data against the prediction. That is why small steps matter so much here. Not because the tasks are important. Because each completion is a vote against the story. Say it out loud when it happens: you were scared and you did it anyway, and that is the part that counts.

Name the loop itself, once things are calm. Older kids especially can hold this. Your brain predicts it will go badly, the prediction makes it harder, so it goes badly, so your brain predicts harder next time. A child who can see the machinery gains a little distance from it. Understanding the loop is not the same as escaping it, though it is where escape starts.

The Bigger Picture

The Sunday stomach ache is not manipulation, and it is not fragility. It is a body that has been paying attention.

Break the loop anywhere and the whole thing loosens. Lower the demand and the fear has less to feed on. Settle the body and the capacity comes back. Finish one small thing and the prediction weakens. None of it happens in a week. All of it compounds.

Your child is not anxious because they are weak. They are anxious because they have been trying hard, for a long time, at things that keep costing them more than they should. That is a reasonable response to a hard situation, not a character flaw.

The stomach ache will fade when the evidence changes. Our job is to help them gather it.

Executive Functioning, Dyslexia, and Dysgraphia: What Helps at Home

Your child tells you a story at dinner. It has a villain, a plot twist, and a genuinely good joke in the middle. You are impressed.

The next afternoon, that same story is due on paper. What comes back is three short sentences, flat as a parking lot, with the good joke nowhere in sight. You know it was in there. You heard it.

It is tempting to read that gap as effort. They rushed. They did not care. They did the minimum. That conclusion is understandable, and it misses what actually happened between the telling and the writing.

The ideas never made it out. Not because they left. Because the pipe they had to travel through was already full.

Reading Was Never Automatic to Begin With

Maryanne Wolf's work on the reading brain starts with a fact that reorders everything: the brain was never designed to read. There is no reading center we are born with. Reading gets built, late and effortfully, by repurposing circuits that evolved for other things. For some children, those circuits come together slowly, or need to be assembled differently.

Here is why that matters at your kitchen table. A skill only stops costing something once it becomes automatic. Until then, it charges rent.

When a child is still working to decode words, the decoding takes the very capacity that comprehension needs. They arrive at the end of the sentence having spent everything on getting there, with nothing left to hold what it meant. This is why a child can read a passage accurately and then have no idea what it said. It is not inattention. The tank was empty by the last word.

Separate the telling from the writing. Let your child say the whole thing out loud first. Sometimes, write it down for them. Scribing is not cheating, it is unclogging the pipe. It lets you both see that the ideas were always there, which is something your child needs to know about themselves.

Read to them well above what they can decode. Comprehension, vocabulary, and love of story do not have to wait for the mechanics to catch up. A child who cannot yet read a chapter book can absolutely think about one.

Take away the peripheral demands during a first draft. Let spelling go. Offer a word bank. Provide a graphic organizer so the structure sits on the paper instead of in their head. Instead of "you just read that word," try "that one is tricky, let's look at it together." Instead of "this is sloppy," try "tell me what you meant here, I want to get it right."

The Bigger Picture

The story your child told at dinner is the truth about them. The three flat sentences are a report on the pipe, not on the child.

Our job is to widen the pipe, one automatic skill at a time, and to make sure that while we are doing it, your child does not decide they are stupid. Those two jobs matter equally. The first one takes instruction. The second one takes you.

The good joke is still in there. It is worth every unhurried afternoon it takes to get it onto the page.

Your child has been learning to tie their shoes for what feels like a year. They get the first loop. Then the second one collapses, the laces go slack, and so does their face. You are both crouched by the door, already late, and the shoes are still open.

Here is the part that makes it confusing. This is the same child who can spend an hour building an elaborate fort, every cushion placed just so, completely absorbed, not a flicker of frustration. So it is tempting to decide they could tie their shoes if they simply tried as hard. That conclusion feels obvious. It is also, gently, not true. Because focus was never really the problem.

ADHD is not a shortage of attention. It is difficulty regulating attention. Your child's brain runs on interest and urgency, not on importance. The fort offers both. The shoe, on a rushed Tuesday morning, offers neither. What looks like not trying is a brain doing exactly what it is wired to do.

Executive Functioning Is the Real Load

Russell Barkley makes the case that ADHD is, at its heart, an executive functioning and self-regulation difference. It is not that your child does not know what to do. Knowing and doing run on separate tracks, and the bridge between them, working memory, a sense of time, the motor planning to sequence each step, the ability to begin, is exactly where things break down.

Performing them in order, under time pressure, while their nervous system is climbing, is a completely different task. Take the clock out of it. Practice when you are not going anywhere. A quiet Sunday, shoes in your lap, no reason to hurry. A skill learned unrushed becomes a skill they own. A skill drilled in a panic becomes a skill they dread.

Make it interesting and learnable. This is the heart of it. A story about bunny ears. A little rhyme for the steps. A favorite lace in a bright color. Interest is not a bonus, it is the fuel their brain needs to stay in the task. When we make a thing learnable, we meet the brain where it engages.

Put the steps where they can see them. A simple picture sequence taped nearby externalizes the order so working memory does not have to hold it. Their attention can go to the doing, not the remembering.

Repeat, warmly, until it is automatic. Every unhurried repetition lays down the neural pathway a little deeper. This is neuroplasticity in plain clothes. What takes full concentration today becomes automatic later, but only with enough calm practice to get there.

Stay close while they work. Sitting beside your child, steady and unbothered, does more than any instruction called across the room. Your calm keeps their thinking brain online.

The Bigger Picture

The shoe is never really about the shoe. It is about how we ask children to do hard things. Make it small. Make it interesting. Take away the rush. Repeat with warmth until their brain owns it. That is not lowering the bar. It is teaching in the way brains actually learn.

Your child is not a willpower problem waiting for the right consequence. What Visual Supports Actually Do

There's a morning that repeats in houses like ours. You say, "Brush your teeth, get dressed, and grab your backpack." Three steps. Your child sets off with full intentions — and turns up eight minutes later wearing one sock, holding a Lego, teeth unbrushed, backpack unlocated.

The standard read is not listening. The accurate read is that the instructions were delivered to working memory — the brain's smallest, most crowded room — and two of the three didn't survive the trip down the hallway. The Lego was simply there, and there beats remembered every time.

Visual supports exist for exactly this. And they are chronically underestimated, because they look like decor: a picture schedule, a checklist, a chart. What they actually are is architecture. Russell Barkley's principle of externalization is the whole idea in one word — an EF-challenged brain does its best work when the plan lives outside the head, at the point of performance, where the task actually happens. The chart on the wall isn't a reminder about the plan. The chart is the plan, stored somewhere that can't get distracted by a Lego.

What This Looks Like

Picture schedules turn a routine into a visible path: teeth → clothes → backpack, in pictures, taped where the morning happens. The child checks the wall instead of your face. Anchor charts hold the rules that would otherwise need re-announcing forever — what "ready for school" means, the steps for a hard word, what to do when you're stuck. Post it once; point instead of repeating. The wall never sounds exasperated.

Visual timers make time — the most invisible thing an EF brain wrestles with — into something you can watch shrink. "Ten minutes" is an abstraction; a red wedge disappearing is a fact.

Why It's Not "Babying"

A worry worth naming, because some adult in your child's life will voice it: shouldn't they just remember on their own?

Glasses aren't cheating for eyes. Externalized plans aren't cheating for executive function. Nobody expects a child with low vision to squint harder at the board; the tool closes the gap, and the child gets on with learning. Same principle here — with a bonus the skeptics miss: supports don't create dependence, they create reps. Every morning your child runs the routine off the wall chart instead of off your voice, they are practicing the sequence — and practicing doing it without you. The wall is how the routine eventually moves into their head. Nagging never gets internalized. Structure does.

You can watch the handoff happen: first they check every picture, then they glance at it twice, then one day the chart is dusty because the morning runs itself. Retire it proudly. It finished its job.

Making One That Works

Keep it simple — pictures over paragraphs, five steps at most; a crowded chart is just clutter with a title. Put it at the point of performance: teeth chart in the bathroom, backpack list by the door. A schedule in the kitchen governing events upstairs governs nothing. Build it with your child — their drawings, their photos, their order where order doesn't matter; a chart they made is theirs to follow, one you imposed is yours to enforce. And when it stops matching real life, change it together. A visual support is a living document, not a monument.

Start with one. The single most chaotic stretch of your day — mornings, homework, bedtime — gets one visible plan taped where it happens. Then watch what changes, including the thing that doesn't get said enough: when the wall holds the plan, you get to stop being the plan. Fewer prompts, fewer battles, more actual time together. The chart isn't just carrying your child's working memory. It's carrying some of yours.

Some get a note the size of a postage stamp. And the child with the postage stamp is asked, all day long, to copy down more than it holds.

"Take out your math book, turn to page 45, and do problems 3 through 7." For plenty of kids that's one smooth motion. For a child with a small working memory, it's a race: by the time the math book is out, page 45 is gone. So they look around at what everyone else is doing, or ask — again — and somewhere a grown-up sighs. The sigh is the part that leaves a mark. Because from the outside this looks like not listening, not caring, not trying. From the inside, the child heard everything, held it, and felt it dissolve mid-use. They're not careless. They're carrying water in their hands.

Where the Sticky Note Shows Up

Working memory is doing quiet labor inside almost everything school asks: following multi-step directions, holding the beginning of a sentence in mind while reading to the end, keeping numbers alive during mental math, remembering the brilliant thing they wanted to write long enough to wrestle it through a pencil. It's the mental desk where thinking gets done — and when the desk is small, work keeps sliding off the edge.

You'll see it as: instructions forgotten seconds after they land, homework abandoned halfway (not out of defiance — the plan evaporated), "I just read that and I don't know what it said," a hand raised to answer and the answer gone by the time you call on them. If several of those feel like your kitchen table, you're likely looking at a working memory difference, not an attitude.

What Helps

The strategy is one idea wearing five outfits: stop asking the sticky note to hold what paper can hold.

One step at a time. Not "clean your room" — "books on the shelf." Then the next thing. You're not lowering the bar; you're feeding the task through at the width the note can take.

Write things down — everywhere. Checklists, sticky notes on the mirror, the three homework steps on an index card. A written plan can't dissolve. (This is the same externalization idea behind visual schedules: the paper remembers so the brain can think.)

Have them say it back. "What are you doing first?" Thirty seconds of repeat-back catches the dropped step before the hallway does, and rehearsing it out loud fixes it a little deeper.

Let them offload out loud. Talking through a math problem, muttering the steps, summarizing a paragraph they just read — externalizing isn't a bad habit. It's the strategy, working.

At school, ask small. Written directions on the board. Instructions in chunks. A quick check-in after directions are given. None of this is exotic; most educators will do it for the whole class once someone names it.

The Reframe That Matters Most

You can strengthen the use of working memory — games like Simon Says or card-matching are fine practice — but the honest goal isn't a bigger sticky note. It's a child who knows how to work with the one they have: who reaches for a list without shame, asks for the instructions again without apologizing, says "let me write that down" at nine years old and still at twenty-nine.

That only happens if the adults get there first — if forgetting is treated, consistently, as a logistics problem and never a character flaw. "Your brain was full — let's write it down" builds a strategist. "I just told you" builds a kid who hides. The sticky note is the size it is. What we write on it, and what we stop making it carry, is up to us.

Less Clutter, More Focus

Let's get one thing out of the way first: this is not a post about making your house look like a catalog. I don't live in a catalog and neither do you. This is a post about attention — specifically, about what a room full of stuff does to a brain that already works hard to filter, focus, and switch gears.

Because here's the thing about visual clutter: for a child with executive functioning challenges, every object in view is a tiny open tab. The Legos on the floor, the art supplies on the desk, the seven stuffed animals watching from the bed — each one is quietly requesting attention, and filtering those requests is itself an executive function. Which means the child with the least filtering capacity is spending the most of it just existing in the room, before the homework even starts.

You've seen the result without necessarily connecting it to the cause. Homework at a cluttered table takes twice as long and produces triple the frustration. Transitions stall — leaving a chaotic room means visually disengaging from forty interesting things, not one. And the general fizziness of an overstimulating space reads as "hyper" or "irritable" when it's really a nervous system doing overtime.

The desk-clearing instinct you have before your own hard work? That's this exact principle. Kids with EF differences need it more and can arrange it less.

Less Stuff Out, Not Less Stuff

The move isn't purging — it's reducing what's visible at once.

Give everything a home, and label it. Bins and shelves with labels (pictures for little kids) turn "clean up" from an unsolvable sorting puzzle into a matching game. Where does this go? The bin says. That's one less decision, times every object on the floor.

Rotate instead of displaying everything. Most of the toys in a box in the closet, a manageable few out at a time, swapped weekly. Two magic effects: the room calms down, and the returning toys feel new again. Fewer choices genuinely means deeper play — a child facing six options engages; a child facing sixty churns.

Zone the room. Sleep here, play there, homework at this table — and keep the homework zone visually boring on purpose. Brains take cues from places; a spot that only ever means one thing starts to switch the brain into that thing on arrival.

Go quiet on the containers. Neutral bins, soft colors. Storage should be the stagehand, not the show.

Prep the set before the scene. Thirty seconds of clearing the table together before homework isn't stalling — it's the transition ritual, telling the brain what's next while removing what would compete with it.

Do It With Them, Not To Them

Tempting as the secret trash-bag purge may be (we've all been there), organizing with your child is the version that builds something. Deciding what stays out, drawing the labels, choosing which bin lives where — that's planning, categorizing, prioritizing. Executive function practice, disguised as a Saturday chore. And a system they helped build is a system they'll actually use, because it runs on their logic instead of yours.

Keep your expectations honest, though: the point is a room their brain can succeed in, not a room that photographs well. "Every toy visible from the doorway has a home" is a win. Perpetual magazine-tidiness is not the assignment.

What You're Really Making

A calmer room gives back more than focus. Kids feel the difference in their bodies — less bombardment, fewer overwhelmed shutdowns at cleanup time, a small but real sense of I can find my stuff, I can manage my space. For a child who spends the school day feeling behind, coming home to a room that isn't shouting is a form of rest.

Start with one surface. The homework table, cleared, today. Not the whole room, not a system overhaul, not a trip to the container store. One boring, peaceful surface — and watch what your child's brain does with the quiet.

And for children with challenges in emotional regulation or executive functioning, processing this kind of information can feel especially overwhelming.

The good news: you don't need a perfect script. What your child needs most is your honesty, your calm, and your willingness to keep the conversation going.

Start by Listening

Before you explain anything, find out what your child already knows. Kids fill in gaps with their imagination, and what they've imagined is often scarier than reality.

Try opening with:

"Have you heard anything at school or from friends about what's happening in the news?"

"I noticed you seemed quiet after we had the news on. What are you thinking about?"

Listen without correcting right away. Let them share what they've heard, even if it's jumbled or inaccurate. This tells you where to start — and it tells your child that their thoughts and feelings matter to you.

For children who struggle with emotional regulation, watch for behavioral cues too. Withdrawal, irritability, clinginess, trouble sleeping, or repeated questions can all signal that something is weighing on them, even if they can't put it into words yet.

Be Honest — But Match Your Child's Age and Readiness

Honesty builds trust. Avoiding scary topics or brushing them off with "don't worry about it" often increases anxiety rather than easing it. Kids know when something is wrong, and silence can feel scarier than the truth.

That said, honesty doesn't mean sharing every detail. It means giving your child enough truthful information to make sense of what they're hearing — in language they can handle.

For younger children, keep it simple and concrete:

"Something sad happened, and a lot of people are feeling upset about it. Grown-ups are working to help."

For older children, you can offer more context, invite their questions, and have a real dialogue — but still lead with facts over fear.

The goal is to be a reliable narrator of the world for your child, not a source of more confusion or alarm.

Always Come Back to Safety

After any hard conversation, children need to hear — clearly and directly — that they are safe.

"I want you to know you are safe. Our family is safe. And if you ever feel scared or confused about something you hear, you can always come to me."

Help them name what they're feeling. You might say:

"It makes sense that you feel worried. A lot of people feel that way right now. That's a normal feeling, and it's okay to have it."

For kids who need extra support with emotional regulation, offer concrete tools: deep breathing, drawing what they're feeling, squeezing a stuffed animal, or just sitting close together quietly. Sometimes connection is the regulation.

Talking About Immigration and ICE

This is a topic many families are navigating right now, and children are hearing about it — at school, from friends, and from the news. Here's how to approach it honestly and with heart.

Start with the truth that kids can understand: people come to this country for all kinds of reasons. Many come because where they lived before was not safe — for them or for their children. Some come looking for work, for education, for a better life. This is what America has always been about.

You can explain that there are laws about how people come to the country, and that sometimes those laws are complicated. Many people who are here without full documentation are actively trying to go through the process — but the process is long, expensive, confusing, and often inaccessible. Some people don't have the resources. Some don't understand the system. Some are still waiting after years.

When kids ask about ICE agents or enforcement, you can say something like:

"There are people whose job it is to enforce immigration laws. But a lot of people — including me — believe that instead of spending so much time and money on enforcement, we should be spending that time and money helping people. Finding out who needs support, figuring out what they need, and problem-solving together. That's what this country is supposed to be about."

If your child is worried about a friend or classmate, validate that:

"It makes sense that you're worried about your friend. That shows how much you care. Being kind and being a good friend is one of the most important things you can do right now."

You don't need to have all the answers. What matters is that your child hears you leading with empathy and problem-solving rather than fear.

Talking About Violence and Injustice

When children hear about violence — whether it's in their community or in the news — they need simple, honest explanations without graphic details.

"Something happened that hurt people, and that is very sad. It's okay to feel upset about it."

If your child asks why people hurt others:

"Sometimes people make choices that cause harm. But there are many, many more people who are working to help, to protect, and to make things better."

When the conversation touches on injustice — racial injustice, police violence, protests — be honest about the fact that not everything in the world is fair yet, and that speaking up for fairness is something to be proud of:

"Sometimes people come together to say 'this isn't right, and we want it to change.' That's called protesting, and it's one of the ways people work toward fairness."

Lead with your values. Kids don't need a political lecture — they need to hear what your family believes about how people should be treated.

Keep the Door Open

One conversation is never enough. The most protective thing you can do is let your child know this is an ongoing, always-welcome topic in your home.

  • Check in regularly, especially after big news events
  • Watch for shifts in mood or behavior that might signal they're processing something
  • Offer books, stories, or shows that gently explore these themes and open up further conversation
  • Let them come back with questions days or even weeks later

For kids who struggle to talk about feelings directly, creative outlets help — drawing, writing, building, role-playing. Meet them where they are.

When to Seek Extra Support

If your child is showing ongoing anxiety, nightmares, difficulty functioning at school or home, or a significant change in behavior, it may be time to seek out professional support.
